Top 10 YouTube Videos

POSTED 23rd September 09, by Mike Griffiths.

Over the last few years YouTube has taken the Internet by storm. It has millions of videos stored online and they're all publically viewable.

YouTube was founded in February of 2005 by two young entrepreneurs. Later, in November of 2006, Google purchased YouTube in one of the most talked-about acquisitions to date.

But what, out of all of YouTube's videos, are the ten most popular?

1. Evolution of Dance - This is basically a video of a comedian dancing to music spanning 50 years. (126 million views at time of writing). View

2. Avril Lavigne's Girlfriend video, now has 125 million views. View

3. Charlie bit my finger - again! Quite simply two kids, one of whom gets their finger bitten. Genius. 121 million views. View

4. A political video against the American Senate. 110 million. Why so many views? Because it's been cleverly disguised as porn. View

5. Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love, 89 million views. View

6. Susan Boyle, 75 million views. View

7. Guitar, is seventh with 63M views. It's 5 minutes of Queen-like guitar licks, by some very talented dude. View

8. Coldplay - Viva La Vida View

9. Baby Panda Sneezing. I remember this making it onto national news. View

10. Stormtrooper gyrating. You'll probably smile. View

As you can see, there's a lot of this taken up by music videos, and to be honest I removed some of them to make the top 10 a little more interesting. The vast majority were taken up by Britain's Got Talent videos and other miscellaneous music videos.

YouTube can be used for more than sharing music and stupid yet funny videos. Viral marketing can help you spread the word for your business, a new product or a promotion. Getting people to actively view your advert rather than being indirectly forced to view it via traditional medium (flicking through a magazine, commercial TV breaks, billboards, etc) means that your audience is giving your advert their full attention - it's also free to put online, all you're paying for is the production costs. The over whelming success of videos such as the Cadbury's adverts including the 'eyebrows' ad and the infamous Gorilla drummer ad show just how easy it can be.
